EIFL will attend two events in Geneva: launch of the newly established Centre on Knowledge Governance and the next session of WIPO’s Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights

EIFL’s Copyright and Libraries Programme Manager, Teresa Hackett, will attend two events in Geneva: the launch celebration of the Centre on Knowledge Governance and the 47th session of WIPO’s Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights.

The mission of the Centre on Knowledge Governance is to promote justice and sustainable development in policy-making institutions that govern access to and use of information, such as WIPO, WHO and WTO.

The launch event, at the Centre’s new home at the Geneva Graduate Institute, features a book launch and a high level panel discussion. H.E. Guilherme de Aguiar Patriota, Ambassador of Brazil to the WTO, will launch a new book - ‘The Journey to the WIPO Treaty on Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge (Policy, Process and People)’ by Wend Wendland, Former Director of the Traditional Knowledge Division at WIPO. A panel discussion on how IP can respond to people’s needs in the 21st century includes eminent experts Prof Ruth L. Okediji, Harvard Law School and Faculty Director, Center for the Study of African Societies and Economies (CSASE), Ellen ‘t Hoen, Director, Medicines Law & Policy and Sean Flynn, Director of the Geneva Centre on Knowledge Governance.

EIFL will also attend WIPO’s Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR/47) that meets from December 1st to 5th 2025. The Committee will discuss four new proposals by member states on key topics to help move discussions forward, including a promising new proposal from the African Group for an instrument on limitations and exceptions for libraries, archives, museums, education and research institutions and people with disabilities.
